Middle School Support of Students on Probation

Students on probation are students who are new to ASA and those students who have earned 3 D´s or 1 F for a semester or those students who have a cumulative grade point average (gpa) of less than a 2.0.

• The Middle School Guidance Counselor meets with each one of these students and their parent(s)/guardian(s) at the end of the semester to sign a probation contract. This contract outlines the probation program and lists the subjects that need improvement and the recommendations for success.

• The counselor meets with probation students individually twice a month to assess academic progress and reviews the student’s Easy Grade Pro (EGP) reports and/or the report card. The counselor makes recommendations based on the report, and when needed, schedules an additional meeting with the student/teacher to follow up on the recommendations made.

• The counselor prepares a spreadsheet after each EGP report. This spreadsheet is used to update the building principal, probation students and their families on the student’s academic progress.

• Parents are included in the process of monitoring their child’s grades through the use of the school’s website where each teacher lists their student’s assignments and grades.

• Parents are asked to meet with the counselor, their child and teachers upon request by the counselor, parent, student or teacher.

• The counselor runs a group with all probation students. This group meets weekly after school. Topics discussed are: study skills, stress management skills, communication skills, time management skills, and other areas considered weak by the group.

Students who are unable to maintain a 2.0 gpa or who have earned 3 D´s or an F for three straight semesters are encouraged to find a more appropriate educational match and are subject to dismissal from ASA.

Middle School Support for Students At Risk

At-Risk students are those students who have earned any number of Ds or Fs on their quarter grades, and those who have earned 1 or 2 Ds for a semester grade. The purpose of this program is to provide the monitoring and mentoring necessary to avoid placing the student in a Probationary Status.

• The Middle School Guidance Counselor sends a letter attached to the Quarter Report Cards and the Semester Report Cards notifying students and parents of their low academic performance and their placement in At-Risk category. This letter outlines the At-Risk program and lists the subjects that need improvement and the recommendations for success.

• The counselor meets with At-Risk students individually twice a month to assess academic progress and reviews the student’s Easy Grade Pro (EGP) reports and/or the report card. The counselor makes recommendations based on the report, and when needed, schedules an additional meeting with the student/teacher to follow up on the recommendations made.

• The counselor prepares a spreadsheet after each EGP report. This spreadsheet is used to update the building principal, At-Risk students and their families on the student’s academic progress.

• Parents are included in the process of monitoring their child’s grades through the use of the school’s website where each teacher lists their student’s assignments and grades.

• Parents are asked to meet with the counselor, their child and teachers upon request by the counselor, parent, student or teacher.

Students who are unable to maintain a 2.0 gpa or who have earned 3 D´s or an F at the end of the Semester are placed on Probationary Status and subject to all services and responsibilities of Probationary students.
