The following information is for Paraguayan students studying at the American School of Asuncion who wish to apply to Universities in Argentina.

When to Apply

Students may apply up until January 1 prior to that year’s academic year. Check with the university that you wish to apply as the application due dates may vary. The school year begins February/March and ends February. Courses of study vary in the years needed to complete the field of study.

Students must contact the universities to obtain specific information about the application process at that school. Most schools require that applications are received by January 1 for the following school year.

Cost of Universities

The cost of attending a university in Argentina varies. Generally, a student can expect to pay around $5,000 U.S. per year. A few schools offer housing for students but most do not. A three bedroom apartment costs around $300 per month while finding housing in a home will cost around $200 a month and will include breakfast and in some cases additional meals.

Brazil

The following information is for Paraguayan students studying at the American School of Asuncion who wish to apply to Universities in Brazil.

Proficiency in Portuguese

Students must pass a level of proficiency in use of Portuguese. This can be accomplished by studying the language at the Centro de Estudios Brasilero. Some students are able to pass the Portuguese Language Entrance Level to Universities Test with six months of intensive study. The cost of attending the Centro de Estudios Basilero for test preparation is 100.000 per month for a total of 600.000 over the six month period (2002). Students may also attend test preparation courses offered by private tutors. At the end of this period, the test is administered and those students that successfully pass this test will have their results sent to all public universities in Brazil. Please note: the test must be taken October 2002 in order to attend school in 2004. Some ASA students are taking Portuguese now. The next test preparation session start in May 2002.

The Centro de Estudio Brasilero also helps students complete application papers in order to send them to the universities. After acceptance, the Centro will advise students on what papers to take to the Embassy of Brazil in order to obtain a student visa.

Cost of Public Universities

Public universities in Brazil are tuition free. The students need to purchase their books and suppliers as well as pay for their room, board and insurance. Also, students are responsible for finding their own housing. An average cost (2002) for a student to spend for room, board and insurance (no dental coverage) is 200.000 per month (2002). There are some scholarships that are available to help with expenses. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of test results on the Portuguese Language Entrance Test for Universities in Brazil.
