Elementary Office
Welcome to the Elementary Section of ASA!
ASA Elementary is a Basic School. In fact, it is one of the first Basic Schools in South America. The US National Network of Basic Schools numbers over 125 member schools in 26 U.S. states. Dr. Ernest Boyer, former president of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, founded the network in the 1970's. What is a Basic School? A Basic School is a comprehensive plan to strengthen elementary education by bringing together the key components of effective education and best practices. We believe at ASA that every child has a right to a quality education, that high standards must be set, and that every child can and will succeed in ways that reflect his or her own aptitudes and interests. Our school uses the four priorities of a Basic School in our pursuit of excellence.
I. The School as Community
At ASA, community begins with a shared vision. The circle of community includes teachers, parents, the principal, the Guidance Counselor and all support staff. Our community is one with a sense of purpose, a climate that is communicative, just, disciplined, and caring, and with occasions for celebrations. Parents are viewed as partners in their child's education. They are the first and most important teachers.
II. A Curriculum with Coherence
ASA implements a US standards-based thematic curriculum throughout the elementary school. Best practices in teaching are used to accelerate language development and literacy in both English and Spanish.
III. A Climate for Learning
At ASA, each student is viewed as a unique individual. In that light, our aim is to respond to individual learning styles as best as possible in order to teach children to capitalize on their individual strengths. Students are encouraged to become disciplined, responsible, creative, and self-motivated learners. Classroom environments are responsive to a wide range of skill levels. We strive to offer a rich variety of resources which serve to stimulate the academic, physical, emotional, and social growth of the child. In addition to studying language arts, science, social studies, math, students also participate in classes in Guarani, art, physical education, music, and technology. All grade levels have bilingual teachers' aides who are there to support learning and language development.
IV. A Commitment to Character
A Basic School is concerned with the ethical and moral dimensions of a child's life. At ASA, our goal is to assure that all students develop a keen sense of personal and civic responsibility. Seven core virtues, such as respect, compassion, and perseverance, are emphasized to guide us as we promote excellence in living and learning.
If You Have A Question or Comment...
We believe that the best place to ask a question is usually at its source. So, if you have a question or comment, we encourage you to begin by discussing it with the people involved. Please feel free to contact Principal's Office at 600-479 Ext. 117 or by email at elemsec@asa.edu.py. We are always available.
