Tell me more about the Peace Path and Family Meetings. THE PEACE PATH
The following is a brief description of one of the problem-solving processes ASA students use at school. This is a system that parents could also implement at home with siblings. The problem-solving process is called the “Peace Path” and could be carried out in your home at a “Peace Table”. A peace table can be any table. It’s a place where your children can talk over and solve their problems by themselves. If children need help to solve a problem, any family member may mediate. A mediator does not judge, take sides or give the children the solution. Tell the children there will be no name-calling, blaming, or hitting. The object of mediation is to solve problems so that they don’t occur again; it should not be used as a punishment. The following are the steps of the Peace Path: 1. Each child states the problem and how he or she feels with an "I feel_________" statement. 2. Each child repeats back what the other child said to assure understanding. 3. Each child thinks of ways that the problem can be solved. 4. The children agree upon a solution that will work for both of them and exit in peace. It is important that the children take responsibility to carry out their part of the agreement and that they are congratulated when they solve their conflicts nonaggressively. FAMILY MEETINGS Another idea for conflict resolution is to hold family meetings. Schedule these meetings once a week or twice a month. This will give all family members an opportunity to discuss things that bother them and acknowledge appreciation for the special things that others do for them. Most importantly, enjoy your children. Let daily routines: eating together, shopping, and getting ready for bed-- be a time of fun, trusting, sharing, and growing responsibility. Work together as a family. Set up experiences which encourage your child to cooperate. Let family members know you love them and care about them. This is the gift of love which is the most important gift you could ever give your children. |
