How does ASA Elementary Welcome New Students?

We welcome our new students with open arms and value the international nature of our school! At ASA, we realize the need to help new families and students with their transition and adaptation to a new school. Different languages, school systems, and culture shock are some of the stressors international and mobile families have to face. With that in mind, we organize the following as an orientation program for our new students.

Following the admission placement testing and upon acceptance of admission to ASA, new students are assigned an ambassador to help them with the transition to a new school. The ambassadors, who are current students in the same grade level and class, take the new students on a tour of the school and help them throughout the new students' first weeks of school.

If entering at the beginning of either of the semesters, the new students will also attend a New Student Orientation which is the day before the first day of the semester. Students are introduced to their ambassadors and classroom teachers at this time. Parents are also provided with pertinent information about ASA Elementary.

Throughout the first several weeks of school at ASA, new students also meet weekly during the lunch hour with the Elementary Guidance Counselor. They attend in small groups with other new students who are facing similar experiences. This opportunity provides the students a chance to talk and receive feedback about their experiences in being new to ASA. Lunch times are also organized with invited friends and with the Elementary Principal.
