ATHLETICS
Physical Education The physical education program at ASA is a part of the total educational program that contributes mainly through movement experiences to the total growth and development of all children. This includes individual and group activities that focus on the development of locomotor skills, manipulative skills, fitness, and body awareness. Students are also taught the importance of self-responsibility, team cooperation, and sportsmanship as part of the learning process. ASA students develop an appreciation for physical activities that they can carry with them outside of school. Students in middle school and high school are required to wear ASA’s physical education uniform which can be purchased in the school’s PTA Store. Failure to wear the uniform will result in grade penalties. Elementary students are also to use the P.E. uniform for their physical education classes. After School Athletics The after school athletic program is offered to all students from grades 1-12. Elementary practices and games are generally right after the regular school day, followed by middle and high school. There are currently 22 different ASA teams assembled at all levels that offer the following sports; soccer, basketball, volleyball, team handball, and track. The elementary, middle and high school basketball and track teams compete in Paraguayan Confederation tournaments each semester. Soccer, volleyball, basketball, and team handball participate in local intercolegial tournaments, a national tournament in Encarnacion, and weekly “amistosos” with other schools. The middle and high school boys’ and girls’ soccer and basketball teams are involved in an international tournament (“Rancho” and “Ranchito”) where they are able to compete with other international schools from Brazil. Conduct and academic achievement as well as class and practice attendance are used in determining eligibility for participation in the school’s athletic program and international events. In these cases the report card from the previous quarter will be the basis for decisions on eligibility. |
