Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies:

·        Our goal is for students to take an AR test every week.  Please encourage you child to read their AR book for homework on Tuesdays and participate in the AR program.

·        Students continued working on creating a landform book.  For this activity they were asked to write definitions for various landforms and color pictures of these landforms.

·        We continued researching landforms for our landform research project.  During Science class students were working on their sloppy copy of their landform book and when they finished they asked a friend to peer edit their work.  They were then asked to sign up for a teacher’s conference.  We are impressed with how well students are researching and reading for information.

·        We continued Reader’s Workshop this week.  Every student will read independently one of the books in their book bag.  Students complete three sentence starters in their reading response journal and also identify five difficult words and guess the meaning.  When this is complete they may sign up for a reading conference.  At the conference we will discuss the sentence starters and difficult words and have the child read a section of the book.  A mini lesson based on student need, will occur to focus on how each individual can become a better reader.  When the student shows that they understood the book they will then be able to replace it with a new book in their book bag.   We are participating in Readers Workshop on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

·        Every day the students participate in an editing activity where a students writing is chosen (with their permission) and students are asked to make corrections to the writing.  The focus on some of the corrections will be capitals, spelling, grammar and punctuation.

Math:

  • This week we continued to focus on subtraction of 10 from a double digit numbers.  For example:  56-10= 46.  Students worked individually to solve these math problems
  • The students worked on an activity using three number tiles and addition, subtraction and equal sign tiles.  They were to create equations that were true and false using their tiles.
  • The students worked on two games where they tried to memorize math fact and recall them without looking.
  • The students were also in small groups learning 5 new activities on patterns.  These activities will be placed at the Menu table and they will be expected to participate independently in these activities during the Math Menu center.
