Classroom Information:
Mark your calendars:
Wednesday December 7: Elementary Water Day.
Thursday December 8: Caacupe Holiday,
no school.
Monday December 12: Elementary
Picnic Lunch.
Thank you for coming to our Thanksgiving Celebration
last week! It was beautiful and the students loved
having you all there. I was very proud
of all the first graders, they did a wonderful job!
Please remember to send a thermos of cold
water on Tuesdays and Thursdays for PE.
It is getting hot, and our class thermos is not enough for all of
us. Sending a thermos of water
everyday would be a good idea. The students
keep their thermoses in the class and drink whenever they are thirsty. Research shows
that the human brain needs a lot of water to work well!
Please remember that Student agendas need to be signed everyday. Please check your child’s agenda for the
homework. We will also be using the
agendas to communicate with you. Feel
free to write in them. We do not send
agendas home on Fridays.
The homework schedule is the following:
Monday: Practice
writing weekly spelling words.
Tuesday: A book on tape or Reading Envelope.
Wednesday: Math homework
Thursday: Study for spelling test.

The
core virtue for the months of November and December is giving. We
will be focusing on giving without expecting a reward or something in return. The students brainstormed a great list of
things we can give to others every day.
Some of the things they came up with are:
give love, give friendship, give hugs, give kisses, give time, give thanks,
give smiles, give a wave, give hellos, give care. We talked about how we can make a
person feel happy by giving them any of these. Take a look at our bulletin board to see
all the thinks you can give, especially during this holiday season. Our school’s theme is: A.S.A. Where Everyone is Welcome and Appreciated. We
have been talking about this in class with the students. They brainstormed what it would look like,
sound like and feel like when this happened.
We would appreciate it if you could talk about our school theme and
the core virtues at home. Ask your
child what they could do to make others feel welcome and appreciated. |

CHILDREN WHO ARE READ TO, LEARN TO READ
In Social Studies
we are talking about holidays. The
main idea is that there are many different holidays and that people celebrate
different holidays. We want the
students to realize that not everyone celebrates the same holidays. During read-aloud
we are reading fiction and non-fiction books about different holidays. We are talking
about Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanzaa and New Year’s this month. This week our spelling
words were from the -ug word family. Next week we will be reviewing the short
vowel sounds for our last spelling test. In Writers’ Workshop students continue working on their
stories. Writers’ Workshop is an on-going process; some students are working
on their rough draft, others are working on their final drafts, some are
ready to make their covers and title pages.
When their story is complete we publish it. They read their story to the class, and then
put it out in our library for everyone to read. As soon as they publish a story they start
working on a new one. Students are publishing books
non-stop. Many students are working on
their third and fourth books. In first grade we
write birthday books for every child. Each student makes a page and we then put
them together into a book. Your child
will take on birthday book home during the month of his/her birthday. The birthday books are in English and
Spanish. Ask your child to read the
book to you. This week we also started assessing students
to evaluate their progress in the different academic areas. It is amazing to see how much every single
student has grown. They are all blooming! |

Math
|
|
||
|
We continue working on
adding and subtracting numbers with sums greater than 10. Students are working on counting on, counting back and we are trying to remember some of
our facts as well. We also played a game
where students took turns hiding toy bears and the other student had to guess
how many where hiding (missing addends). |
