November, 2005

La información contenida en este boletín refleja las actividades de clase realizadas durante el mes de noviembre del 2005. Eventos futuros también están incluidos.

Welcome to the Kinder 5 newsletter! The purpose of this newsletter is to give you an idea of what we are doing this month in Kinder 5. For more information, talk to your friendly K5 classroom teacher!

Subjects

Social Studies: We are learning about the family. First, we will study the names of family members (mother, father, sister, brother, uncle, aunt, cousin, grandmother, grandfather.) Next, we will study both the nuclear and extended family. We will make family trees, and compare and contrast families. In addition, we will discuss family traditions and cultures.

Science: Nutrition: the food pyramid; special focus on fruits and vegetables and their benefits.

Mathematics: Patterns – continuing patterns and creating new patterns. In October, we will have a pattern parade with both K5A and K5B participating. In addition, we will be beginning to study the numbers 1-10; identifying the number; making groups with the numbers; writing the numbers; counting aloud; practicing what number comes next or before the given number.

Language Arts: Continued practice of letter sounds; blending sounds to form simple words (consonant, vowel, consonant: C-U-P); studying the vowel sounds and practicing the sounds often; rhyming word families (cat, hat, bat; red, bed, led, etc.); reading comprehension: making predictions and making personal connections to the literature; responding to literature using pictures and simple words; writing: sounding out words to write them with phonetic spelling.

**Note: Please read aloud to your child every day. This is the most important thing that you can do as parents to help your child learn to read. It does not matter if you read to them in English, Spanish or another language.

Social Development: This month, we are focusing on the idea of compassion and being a kind friend to others. We are learning how to share; to only use kind words and not make fun of others; to help people; and to respect personal and physical differences.
