Math: Multiplying Decimals

In Math class we have recently been working with multiplication.  This week we extended multiplication to include decimals.  How is it possible to multiply two numbers together and get a smaller number?  That’s what happens when you multiply a decimal times a decimal.

Science: Light and Sound

How do mirrors work?  What is bioluminescence? What are the differences between opaque, translucent and transparent?  You child should know the answer to all of these questions.  Next  week we will continue with our study of light.

Language Arts

The students came back to school excited about their first writing project.  We have begun Part 1 of our Memory Book.  All year the students will be composing pieces for their memory book and will leave the elementary with a book full of memories of their last year.

Do you have a favorite author?  Have you ever written him or her a letter?  Leigh Botts wrote many letters to his favorite author and received interesting responses.  Dear Mr. Henshaw is the first book we will be reading in 5th grade.  We will read this book as a whole class.

The main objectives are:

  • Increase vocabulary
  • Learn letter writing format
  • Make inferences based on reading
  • Get back into a reading routine
  • Of course, HAVE FUN!

Social Studies:  Slavery and The Civil War

In Social Studies class, we have been focusing on what events led to the Civil War in the United States.  We have learned that the biggest factor for the war was not slavery, but it was about power.  The states that allowed slavery (slave states) were loosing population (representation in the House of Representatives) and they were loosing representation in the Senate because Free States outnumbered Slave States.  The war was about power in congress.

However, on January 1st, 1863 President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation which changed the focus of the war from power to slavery.   Until the end of the war in 1865 the focus was on slavery.

We have been working hard on learning how to take notes.  This skill takes a lot of practice and a great deal of patience.  We are learning how to take notes from both lecture and reading.  Hopefully this skill will be used by these students for the remainder of their academic careers.
